Lillian Gish: A Sort of Eucharist
Interview with Tennessee Williams

Whatever else can be said, I need to stress that my survival owes a great deal to the fact that Lillian Gish existed, was on the screen, and served as a sort of Eucharist to which my mother and I could escape and receive. The world is just too harsh--my world was just too harsh--for there not to be a Lillian Gish in the world.
I owe her a great deal.
